A ripoff that, as far as I'm concerned, improves on the original. The plot is simple Jet Li defends Christy Chung who eventually falls in love with him. It’s simple, nothing special, but I appreciate that. Most of the action involved gunfights that were... cool, I guess, but not as entertaining as they could have been. There also wasn’t enough martial arts and fighting in melodrama didn’t really work but Chung and Li are talented enough to make it did like the feel of the film though. Golden Harvest's answer to Mick Jackson's THE BODYGUARD 1992 is a rather underwhelming experience considering all the talent involved. The story is foreseeable and generic, while the action only gets exciting during the climatic fight Jet Li vs. Collin Chou. It's kind of a middle-of-the-road movie for both Corey Yuen director/action coordinator and Jet Li. You made me cry. Yes, already an obvious huge improvement on the Hollywood action is great, top notch even, but the narrative has a hard time to keep you engaged due to an overly melodramatic love story leading to some unfortunately hysterical over the top bit of a mixed bag but still enjoyable. Nowhere near top tier Jet Li however. Great fight sequence between Li and Collin Chou to finish the movie. I love the age old tradition of borrow a popular movie and retool it for locals; alas, it’s now become a guiding principal, usually without the localisms to bring it something extra. Just dig that cool nineties blue and white palette between the action sequences. Also, tip of the hat to any action film that lets a kid take it in the ankle; not your usual fare. A million goons are sent to murder her, and one specific goon has a murderous brother who gets enraged when Jet Li murders his goon brother. It’s a tale as old as time. The story is fine and it better be since the movie is 95% story and 5% action. Jet Li will occasionally pummel an intruder but because he’s so fast, the fight is over in four seconds. The final fight though is of course ridiculously actual ending is a huge bummer though. You want a non-Hollywood ending? Well here you go. I knew eventually I'd find a movie made by Corey Yuen I wouldn't enjoy, it was just a matter of time. So far, I always liked his movies for having a combination of great stunts / action sequences while being somewhat on the goofier side of things or outright not giving a fuck.The huge tonal shifts and heavy-handed bits don't bother me so much when the whole movie is this one is pure heavy-handedness cranked to the maximum. Also, unfortunately, the action sequences the whole 4 minutes of them don't amount to those of you who are looking for a good dramatic performance by Jet Li, Fearless is the movie to look out for, not… A once-lost entry from my Jet Li collection, which turns out to be strongly middle-of-the-road in terms of his HK entries. Rather than just a few elements that signal she's falling for him, this one instead shows it as a full-on plot-point to the degree that it really begins to drag the film down as she contemplates telling him or not. This isn't detrimental but rather slightly problematic, as this still manages to deliver the goods as an action film with some outstanding scenes including a marvelous shootout in a crowded mall that's just all kinds of enjoyable, a brawl on the city streets that works well and the finale in the house with a series of clever, ingenious shoot-outs before segueing into one of Jet's better brawls with the main bad guy who provides a good enough match overall. This was pretty good and only slightly flawed. Ever wanted to see The Bodyguard movie with more Jet Li and Martial Arts. This movie is for you. It's a direct adaptation but less singing and more gun fights on a skateboard. 5/10The Bodyguard from Beijing is a 1994 action movie starring Jet Li. Jet Li must protect a young woman who has recently witnessed a murder by a dangerous member of the reason why this movie is just okay in my opinion is because of the attrotious first half of the film. In the first half, the characters are all annoying and unlikable, the movie is tonally inconsistent and the film didn't seem to have a sense of direction. It seemed just like another generically bad action movie. However, the second half was far better. The characters became more complex, less annoying and more interesting, the film stuck to a tone and, with the introduction of the villain,… Better than Costner’s The Bodyguard 1992 but the English dubbing is distractingly bad! The lightning-fast fight sequences make up for a lot of it, though.
