Chief among them is The Flash’, the latest in the DC extended universe which comes with lots of positive word-of-mouth – Tom Cruise is a fan – but a complicated back story. Harrison Ford picks up the bullwhip and fedora for his fourth outing fifth, if you include The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull’, which apparently you have to in the pacy and fun Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’, and Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City’ delivers a touching story of lockdown and family life in his own witty answer to Area 51. Good things come in smaller sizes this month, too, with comedy-drama Pretty Red Dress’ delivering a heartfelt story of Black masculinity set in South London. Photograph Patti Perret/20th Century Studios The Boogeyman Brit filmmaker Rob Savage Host graduates from lockdown shockers made for pennies to a Hollywood-scale horror adapted from a Stephen King novel. He’s already won over the great man himself, with the novelist declaring himself well and truly spooked by an early glimpse at The Boogeyman. If you loved The Babadook, this could be this summer’s go-to scarefest. In cinemas Jun 2 Photograph Christopher Raphael/Amazon Prime Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant Stepping outside his macho crime-comedy comfort zone, Guy Ritchie goes for something a little different with this action-thriller a macho war drama. Jake Gyllenhaal plays a vet who returns to Afghanistan to rescue the interpreter who saved his life from the Taliban. Already out in the States, the movie has received good marks for the lead performances and Ritchie’s relative restraint, but make no mistake – the guy still knows how to make things go boom. Only this time, the explosions are accompanied by manly tears. On Amazon Prime Jun 2 Photograph Searchlight Pictures Chevalier The son of a plantation owner and an African slave, unheralded 18th century French composer Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, finally gets his due in this opulent period piece set in the court of Marie Antoinette Lucy Boynton. Kelvin Harrison Jr, so good in blistering 2020 drama Waves, brings his charisma as a firebrand who woos Samara Weaving’s aristocrat and violin-battles Mozart yes in a film that works both as a flamboyant period romance and a study of institutionalised racism. In cinemas Jun 9 Photograph UIP Transformers Rise of the Beasts Those giant smashy robots from outer space return to turn our cities into giant piles of rubble again in a sequel to 2018 spinoff Bumblebee’. This one unleashes three new Transformers factions – the Maximals, the Predacons and the Terrorcons – and some fresh-faced new humans In the Heights’ Anthony Ramos and Judas and the Black Messiah’s Dominique Fishback on a mid-’90s Brooklyn that won’t know what’s hit it. In cinemas Jun 9 Photograph Warner Bros. The Flash This DC superhero adventure comes wreathed in troubled back story but the early word is strong on the studio’s first superhero effort since Shazam! Fury of the Gods. If audiences are willing to look past the controversies that have dogged its star, Ezra Miller, The Flash has more enough selling points to avoid suffering the same fate at the box office. The multiversal storyline sees a return to the Batsuit for Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck, as well as a comeback for Michael Shannon’s General Zod. In cinemas Jun 16 Photograph BFI Pretty Red Dress Ex-con Travis Natey Jones emerges from prison to discover his family life in flux. Then he tries on the sequined dress he’s bought for his girlfriend popstar-turned-actress Alexandra Burke and the allure of a new identity proves irresistible. This warm-hearted South London comedy-drama from debut filmmaker Dionne Edwards was a crowdpleaser on home turf at last year’s London Film Festival and should repeat the trick at the cinema in what’s shaping up to be a gala year for movies and TV shows set south of the Thames. In cinemas Jun 16 Photograph Jasin Boland/Netflix © 2023 Extraction 2 Tyler Rake may sound like something you’d pick up in a branch of The Home Depot, but Chris Hemsworth’s beefy, if improbably-named action hero is a fully-fledged star in the Netflix firmament. He’s back for a second outing to follow up 2020’s Bangladesh-set action-thriller, this time to rescue the family of a Georgian gangster from prison. With the Russo brothers, the scale and explosions should be sizeable. On Netflix Jun 16 Photograph Studiocanal Wicker Man 50th Anniversary Release UK horror fans are in for a treat this summer with The Wicker Man returning to the big screen for one night only in its 4K restored, Final Cut’ iteration. There are a few versions of Robin Hardy’s landmark folk horror out there, of course, but this is the one the filmmaker swears by. A cult classic in every sense, it follows Edward Woodward’s Christian policeman into a pagan community brimming with dark secrets. In cinemas for one night only, Jun 21 Foto UniversalAsteroid City Asteroid City Wes Anderson follows up The French Dispatch’ with a torch song to families in all their unruly, painful glory. Set in a dusty desert town in a 1950s alive with Cold War paranoia and the thrill of space exploration, Asteroid City’ is an unexpected lockdown yarn in which a group of Junior Stargazers and their families get stuck in situ with only each other, an other-worldly presence, a diner and a martini vending machine to amuse them. It should be another heartfelt showcase for Anderson’s inexhaustible creativity. Think Close Encounters of the Wes’ kind. In cinemas Jun 23 Photograph Lucasfilm Ltd. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny The early reactions at Cannes were subdued but, come on, it’s not every day an Indiana Jones’ movie rolls, boulder-like, into your local cinema. This one reintroduces those old Indy adversaries, the Nazis, in an adventure involving a time-travelling McGuffin and a wisecracking goddaughter played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge to help on the adventure. Expect all the usual exotic locales, chases, archaeological exposition and absolutely no nuked fridges. In cinemas Jun 28 Photograph Picturehouse Entertainment Mother and Son Unfolding over 20 years, this wrenchingly intimate drama follows a single mother from the Ivory Coast struggling to maintain the bond with her sons after immigrating to France. Annabelle Legronne, in particular, has earned raves for her devastatingly realistic performance as the family matriarch whose external toughness is propped up by an increasingly fragile emotionality.
